An Open Building Approach

C4SB convenes technical and market outreach interest groups and working groups who share a common vision of driving open digital transformation of real estate to unlock higher value in our buildings and built environment. This open digital transformation supports data-informed decision making across the lifecycle of buildings, enables plug & play composable solutions, accelerates the adoption of AI, opens up vendor choice for owners, and widens the talent pool and career opportunities for real estate, facilities and related fields.

As part of the Linux Foundation, all of C4SB’s efforts are committed to collecting, developing and sharing open standards and open source resources through an open, community-driven consensus process. Interest Groups discuss topics of interest. Working Groups produce outputs such as open standards docs or open source code. Interest and Working Groups are self-governing, and may explore different solutions to the same issue. At the same time, Interest and Working Groups are encouraged to find alignment with other groups, in order to minimize confusion and maximize widespread adoption. Ideas for new Interest or Working Groups are encouraged to reach out to info@c4sb.org.

The Asset Leadership Standard project helps establish the “Why?” Why is it beneficial for top leaders to have smart assets talk with each other and outside markets such as the energy grid?

The Available IBBs project gathers working examples of solutions based on the Interoperable Building Box (IBB) open digital architecture that enables cloud-native, on-premises data exchange between applications.

Creating CPs for IBB

The CPs for IBB project develops working Connection Profiles to link applications and data sources to the IBB.

Div2525 enables building owners, engineers, contractors, and master system integrators to accurately specify (for procurement) the resources required to make their buildings smarter.

The Interoperable Building Box (IBB) project is developing an open digital architecture that enables cloud-native, on-premises data exchange between applications.

The LonMark project is merging the LonWorks International organization into the C4SB project series of The Linux Foundation.

The Managed BACnet project is addressing technology and implementation challenges for deploying BACnet into cloud-native buildings.

Semantic Buildings

The Semantic Buildings project explores and tests the integration of different open-source semantic models to create useful knowledge for improved building design and operation.

The TxO project develops, collects and publishes open standards for Total “X” of Ownership KPIs and decision making for real estate and building portfolio management.
